OIG Announces August 2017 Work Plan Updates

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) recently announced on June 15, 2017 that it will be updating the OIG Work Plan on a monthly basis rather than as it previously did once or twice a year. The OIG’s Work Plan includes several projects that the OIG’s Office of Audit Services (OAS) and Office of Evaluation and Inspections (OEI) are currently undertaking or planning to undertake in the future. The topics and focus of these projects are often indicators of potential compliance risk areas for health care providers and other participants in the health care industry.

The August 2017 updates released this week include the following four new Work Plan items:

1. Review of Patient Safety Organization Program, including implementation of the program among hospitals and oversight by Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
2. Duplicate Drug Claims for Hospice Beneficiaries under both the Medicare Part A per diem and drug benefits under Medicare Part D.
3. Medicare Part B Payments for Psychotherapy Services, including services that were not covered, inadequately documented, or medically unnecessary. This is a follow-up to a prior OIG review.
4. Reasonableness of Medicare Payments for Ventilation Devices Compared to Open Market due, in part, to the lack of competitive bidding by Medicare for these devices.
